Pyelonephritis is a bacterial infection of the upper renal tract; it can be acute or chronic.
Usually, the infection is localized to a single kidney, including renal interstitial tissue and renal pelvis.
In most cases pyelonephritis is caused by:
- urinary bladder infections (cystitis, urethritis, prostatitis) which do not respond to treatment or relapse and can spread towards the kidneys
- anatomical abnormalities in the structure of the kidney which can hamper the complete elimination of the urine
- other chronic conditions that disrupt the activity of the renal system: kidney stones, uric diathesis, diabetes, major endocrine disorders, prostate adenoma, vesico-urethral reflux, renal system tumors

At the onset, chronic pyelonephritis may present symptoms similar to cystitis: urination accompanied by burning, cloudy urine, constant need to urinate, incomplete emptying of the bladder and micturition disorders. Later, after the inflammatory process has spread, or in acute forms, pain occurs, also febrile episodes (39-40 degrees), chills, fatigue and exhaustion, drowsiness, general malaise, headache, decreased appetite, soft stool, edema, dryness of the skin and of the mucous membranes.
