The ancient but miraculous Chinese vision upon life originates in the profound apprehension of three main treasures: sky, humanity and earth. This vision endows humanity with a natural system that has to be studied, understood and lived. The system is called “The eight Branches of Tao” and includes I Ching, Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, Feng Shui, Qi Gong, Nei Dan, Astrology and Taoist Yoga.
Feng Shui, also called in several contexts the acupuncture of earth, is a valuable instrument in the art of analyzing, balancing and activation of the energies that effect health, human interactions and relations and prosperity. In the same way as acupuncture does, Feng Shui ideology is based on the natural cycle of the five elements, the dynamics between Yin and Yang, the masculine and feminine energies.
From a certain perspective, the natural system of meridians can be compared with the way in which rivers, air currents, water reservoirs and underground springs function in nature, becoming this way a metaphor for the functioning and movement of vital chi substances, blood and other body fluids through the human body.
Medical Applications
The theory of trigrams, the way in which they correspond with certain spaces in a house as well as with body structures, are basic notions in many schools of Feng Shui; everything is correlated with the health state of certain parts of the body: head, stomach, calf, thighs, ears, eyes, hands, mouth, as with the five elements of nature: metal, earth, wood, fire and water. The are specific methods of prediction that can point the family members which can be affected by the negative structures of a house.
Feng Shui offers the possibility to observe, understand and harmonize the diversity of aspects which lies in the spaces we live in. In Feng Shui believes, the major influences are given by external and internal geometry and by the five element interactions. The five elements can be considered trigger factors of certain sectors of a habitation. The health state is influenced by the way this factors interact with the sectors of our homes.
Applying this theory into practice
Feng Shui methods range from simple to complex. From the study of space energies, shapes, colors and shades; auspicious positions for people’s sleep or work; falling stars – temporal aspects manifesting in our homes periodically, we may derive both ”diagnostics” and remedies for a state of comfort and health.
If this house, facing south, were situated at the end of a street, in a dead end and the energy stream of the street were directed right towards the main southern door, the street would be a “poisoned arrow” then, causing a harmful influence, in a way very similar to the action of the pathogen factors in the traditional Chinese medicine: cold, wind, draft, fire, excessive heat etc. In this case, the inhabitants were possibly affected by eye problems, and insomnia; moreover, the second daughter or the middle-aged woman in the house could be more prone to the respective diseases.
If in the north-western part of the house, the roof is leaned and dull, as in the figure above, the inhabitants of the respective area were likely to suffer from head and skull-related diseases. They could be headaches, nose, throat or ear problems. If a father, the head of the family spent more time in that area, he could be affected by these problems to a greater degree.
At the same time, the north-western part of a house is also governed by Metal as element. If a fireplace or a heating system – both of which are Fire as element – were in the respective area, then there would be a higher chance for the father, head of the family, to be affected by the head-related disorders, because Fire melts Metal.
A Feng Shui specialist would surely be able to offer remedies to counter-balance the shortcomings. He will also be able to recommend energizing agents to enhance the potential for health, harmony, concord among the members of the family and general prosperity.
Taking into consideration the multiple connections between our health and the surrounding structures, we could consider Feng Shui an efficient instrument that helps ”prolong” the state of health we acquired undertaking a traditional medicine treatment, aiding it at home, too.
